How to Properly Store Your Car Cover When Not in Use

A car cover that’s crumpled on the garage floor or stuffed in a trunk won’t last nearly as long as one that’s stored properly. Here’s a simple system for storage that keeps your cover clean, dry, and ready to use.

Why Storage Matters

A poorly stored cover collects dust and grit that scratch your paint the next time you use it. If stored wet, it develops mildew that smells bad and damages the waterproof coating. Folded with sharp creases, the fabric weakens at the fold lines and tears sooner.

Good storage solves all three problems and extends cover life by 6-12 months.

The Accordion Fold Method

This is the fastest, cleanest way to fold a car cover for storage:

  1. Stand at one side of the car. Fold the cover in half lengthwise so the side you’re holding meets the opposite side.
  2. Now at the front of the car, fold the cover toward the rear in 18-24 inch sections, accordion-style.
  3. When you reach the rear, you’ll have a neat stack. Slide it into the storage bag.
  4. The accordion fold has no sharp creases and unfolds easily when you pull it back over the car.

Using the Storage Bag

Most quality covers come with a storage bag. Always use it. If yours didn’t include one, any breathable fabric bag works — cotton laundry bag, mesh duffel, even a pillowcase in a pinch. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.

Where to Store the Cover

In the trunk: Perfect for daily use. The cover is always with the car. Just make sure the trunk is clean — no loose tools or sharp objects that could puncture the bag.

In the garage: Hang the storage bag on a hook or pegboard. Off the floor = no dust, no pests, no accidental damage.

In the car: If you park outdoors and want the cover with you, store it in the trunk or back seat footwell. Never leave a loose cover on the passenger seat — it becomes a projectile in an accident.

Seasonal Storage

If you use your cover only in winter or only in summer, give it extra care during the off-season:
