How to Clean and Maintain Your Car Cover — Extend Its Life to 3+ Years

A quality car cover is an investment. With proper care, a multi-layer Oxford cover can last 3-5 years outdoors. Without it, even premium covers degrade in 12-18 months. Here’s how to maintain yours.

Cleaning Frequency

Outdoor covers: Wash every 2-3 months. Wind-blown dirt, bird droppings, and tree sap accumulate on the outer surface and can eventually bleed through.

Indoor covers: Wash every 6 months. Indoor dust is less aggressive but still builds up over time.

How to Wash a Car Cover

Most multi-layer covers are machine-washable. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the cover and shake it out thoroughly to dislodge loose dirt and debris
  2. Place in a large-capacity front-loading washer (top-loaders with agitators can tear the fabric)
  3. Use cold water and mild detergent — no bleach, no fabric softener
  4. Gentle cycle only
  5. Air dry — never use a dryer. Heat damages waterproof coatings and shrinks elastic hems
  6. Do not wring or twist the cover — hang it over a railing or clothesline

Storage When Not in Use

Most covers come with a storage bag. Always store the cover in its bag when not on the car. A loose cover on the garage floor collects dirt, gets stepped on, and attracts pests.

If the cover is wet when you remove it (morning dew, rain), drape it over a railing or across two chairs to dry before folding and storing. Storing a wet cover leads to mildew and odor that’s nearly impossible to remove.
